Summer of Code Offer

"flip bits not burgers" - not my tag line

For those who don't know, Google has an outreach program they call summer of code. They organize and sponsor students to work on open source projects under mentors. I believe students can make up to $5,500 (USD), and in some cases school credits. I think this is a great idea, and something I wish was around when I was younger. At the Atlanta Linux Fest 2009, I watched a presentation given by someone from Google with a message of trying to encourage other groups to start their own such programs. It didn't occur to me until just the other day that might be a good idea to try with LAD Tools. So while this is fairly late in the year, I'll still put the offer out there and see if anyone is interested. I can't promise school credit, and I don't have the resources to pay what G.S.O.C. does. However, I can pay some (of course agreed on up front), and I can promise invaluable learning lessons.

Unfortunately, a number of legal and practical issues will prevent this from working in all areas of the world on such short notice, but I will try my best to figure something out. You will need a direct logic PLC, which if you don't have and you live in a place that it could be mailed to you in a timely manor, can be provided as part of your compensation, or mailed back if for another person another year if you prefer. The ideal candidate would have at least some knowledge of basic electronics as well.

If you are interested in helping me sponsor such a student, by all means contact me also. If you know a student that might be encourage by something like this, please pass this along as well. While there is a little to loose, there is potentially much to gain. Hopefully I'll hear from some interested people. I would love to get to mention a student is working on with me this summer on LAD Tools at my up coming talk at the Southeast Linux Fest!
